AAS in Medical Assisting

The Medical Assisting Program prepares graduates for one of the fastest-growing occupations in the health care field, with a 29 percent projected growth rate by 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Medical assistants perform routine clinical and administrative duties to ensure the operations of the health care facility. Students in this program acquire necessary competencies such as taking vital signs and electrocardiography, phlebotomy, and preparing patients for examinations and procedures. They receive training for certification in first aid, CPR, and defibrillation. Students also acquire competencies in record keeping, medical coding, billing, and insurance.


Academic Requirements:

  • A grade of 'C' or better is required in the following courses for progression in the major: HC-108, HC-126, HC-105, HC-110, HC-210, HC-230, HC-292, HA-106, HC-214 and HC-180.
  • The Medical Assisting Practicum (HC-292), which is required and generally taken in the final semester,  is available only during the day Monday through Friday.
